Department of Microeconomics Involved in the Economics Olympiad

Prof. Grzegorz Wałęga, from the Department of Microeconomics at the Krakow University of Economics, was appointed to the international jury of this year’s final of the International Economics Olympiad (Economics Olympiad), held in Olympia, Greece, from 10 to 14 August 2026. As a member of the jury, he assessed written tasks, participants’ oral presentations, and the team-based Economic Policy Challenge. Prof. Wałęga has been involved in the Polish Economics Olympiad at the national level for over 20 years, including as a member of the National Committee of the Economics Olympiad. His participation in the international jury provided an opportunity to exchange knowledge and experience with experts from other countries and to contribute to the assessment of the best young economists participating in this year’s final.

This year’s final, held at the International Olympic Academy in Olympia, brought together 147 students from 32 countries across four continents. The Polish team, selected from among the laureates of the 39th Polish Economics Olympiad, achieved an excellent result, winning three silver medals and one bronze medal. Prof. Grzegorz Wałęga’s participation in the Economics Olympiad final forms part of the broader involvement of staff from the Department of Microeconomics in the Polish Economics Olympiad. Prof. Czesława Pilarska serves as Chair of the Regional Committee of the Polish Economics Olympiad and is a member of the jury for the regional competition. Katarzyna Kłosowicz-Toborek, PhD, serves as Secretary of the Regional Committee and is a member of the jury for the national final. Prof. Ryszard Kowalski also serves on the jury of the Polish Economics Olympiad and is a member of both the Main Committee and the juries for the regional and national competitions.

The involvement of the Department’s staff therefore covers various stages of the Economics Olympiad, from organising and assessing national competitions to participation in the international final. It is also part of the Department’s activities aimed at promoting economic knowledge and supporting economic education among young people.
